The curriculum

The National Curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which we develop exciting and stimulating lessons.

Our aim is to create a community where each child is helped and encouraged to become an independent, happy and confident learner.

At Holmesdale School we provide a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based and which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society. The curriculum is not static as we constantly monitor, review and develop it to meet the needs of our pupils and the school community. Our high expectations build on individual achievements and children are encouraged to improve on their previous best.

Our curriculum is based on developing the individual’s knowledge, skills and understanding (what children know, what they are able to do and what they understand about their world) and is delivered through a thematic approach with units of work built around a theme designed to appeal to the children. We use the key elements of the National Curriculum to support learning in the core areas of English and Mathematics.

In Years 1 and 2 we use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Its motto is ‘Great teaching, Great learning, Great fun’. This curriculum helps children develop the learning skills they need for the 21st century. It uses approaches to learning based on different learning styles and the multiple intelligences that children have. It also helps children develop an international perspective to their learning as well as reinforcing their own cultural heritage.

The atmosphere for learning created by the whole staff is supportive and exciting.
